Western Mountains Grant in Action

Students from the Foster Career and Technical Education Center in Farmington, Maine, worked through snow and cold to build a replacement home for an older couple. The Western Maine Community Action project was funded in part by a grant from the Western Mountains Fund of the Maine Community Foundation.

MaineCF celebrated the 25th year of the Western Mountains Fund in September 2017 with two, $2,500 anniversary grants to Hospice Volunteers of Somerset County and Healthy Community Coalition. The King and Jean Cummings Charitable Fund also awarded a $25,000 challenge grant to celebrate the anniversary of the Western Mountains Fund. All contributions to the fund will be matched dollar for dollar. You can support the fund by giving now.

The Western Mountains Fund was launched in 1992 with a gift from the late H. King Cummings, who was an ardent, early supporter of the Maine Community Foundation. The fund’s advisory committee awarded initial grants to Athens Union Meeting House, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kennebec Valley, and Bossov Ballet Theatre, among other nonprofits in the region. Since that time, the Western Mountains Committee has awarded more than $1.7 million in grants.

The Maine Community Foundation manages the Western Mountains Fund, and local leaders, knowledgeable about their communities, help review grant applications and distribute funding.
